The lid sits flat across the top of the filled tray and creates enough of a seal to keep water contained when you pick it up and carry it to the freezer. It is not a pressure seal, so you still need to carry the tray level, but it prevents the sloshing and overspill that happens with an open tray. Once the ice is frozen the lid lifts off easily and the flexible silicone base lets you push cubes out from underneath without any tools.
